Ganadhipa Pancharatnam — I bow to the ocean of kindness, the lord of the gaṇas

A hymn to Ganesha in the same ringing metre as the better-known Pañcaratnam, but in the voice of a Śṛṅgeri pontiff. Each verse piles up epithets: the one hard for the passionate to reach, the one who drove away the crowd of demons, the one who holds a goad in his lotus hand. The sixth verse promises its reward.

English sense

I bow to that lord of the gaṇas, an ocean of the water of kindness. He is hard to reach for people full of worldly passion, and he is worshipped by those who are free of passion. Gods and demons bow to him. He destroys old age and early death. Those who worship his feet beat the Guru in speech and Hari in fortune.

English sense

I always take refuge in him. He is like the sun that gives joy to the lotus face of the mountain king's daughter. His face is an elephant's. He is ready to hold back the crowd of sins of those who bow. His belly is bound with the king of snakes. The glow of his body beats the young rays of the sun.

English sense

I bow to the lord of the gaṇas. Śuka and the other silent sages praise him. He is the syllable that the sound ga stands for. To a row of people who bow to him with wishes, he freely gives what they want. He shines with four arms and is worshipped with open lotuses. He has made known the truth of the Self.

English sense

I gladly bow to Vighnapa. He gives rule over people. He leads the worlds that begin with heaven. He keeps off fever and other diseases. He drove away the crowd of demons. A goad shines in his lotus hand. Those whose minds are free of change always hold him in their hearts.

English sense

This set of five verses on the lord of the gaṇas gives people what they wish. Those who bow and then recite it, full of joy, soon become people whose glory is sung before the learned. They have long lives, great fortune and good sons. There is no doubt.
