Bhaye Prakat Kripala — Kausalyā's stuti at Rāma's birth

The gods have prayed, and the Lord has come, in the palace at Ayodhyā, with four arms and a cloud-dark body. The queen sees him and does not know what to say. She folds her hands and praises him as the infinite one the Vedas cannot reach. Then she remembers she is his mother and asks him, kindly, to put away the grand form and be a child. He does, and the palace fills with the sound of a baby crying. Her words are sung on Ram Navami.

English sense

The kind one, friend of the poor, who does good for Kausalyā, appeared. Seeing his wonderful form, which steals the minds of sages, the mother was filled with joy. His eyes delighted all who saw him. His body was dark as a rain cloud, and in his four arms he held his own weapons. He wore ornaments and a forest garland and had wide eyes: an ocean of beauty, the slayer of Khara.

English sense

With folded hands she said, "How can I praise you, Infinite One? You are beyond māyā, its qualities and knowledge, and without pride. So the Vedas and Purāṇas say. You are an ocean of kindness and joy, a mine of every virtue, sung by the scriptures and the saints. That same Lord of Śrī, loving his devotees, has appeared for my good."

English sense

The Vedas say that every pore of your body holds whole crowds of universes made by māyā. That same one lived in my womb. This is laughable, and hearing it, even a steady mind does not stay steady. When knowledge dawned in her, the Lord smiled. He wanted to play in many ways. He told her a lovely story and made his mother understand, so that she could feel a son's love.

English sense

Then the mother spoke, her mind unsteady: "Dear child, give up this form. Do the lovely play of a baby, for that joy is the highest and has no equal." Hearing her words, the wise one began to cry, and the king of the gods became a baby. Those who sing this story reach the feet of Hari, and do not fall into the well of worldly life.
