Chapter 209·The Rule of Twilight Worship·Verses 1–9
Brahmā gives the twilight worship of the twice-born in brief. Whoever remembers the lotus-eyed Lord is pure within and without, whatever state he is in. The Gāyatrī is introduced with its seer Viśvāmitra, its metre and its three feet, with the oceans for its belly, sun and moon for its eyes, Agni for its mouth, Viṣṇu for its heart and Brahmā and Rudra for its head. The seven worlds are placed on the feet, knees, heart, head, tuft, throat and forehead, and the limbs are protected with homage, svāhā, vauṣaṭ, huṃ and phaṭ. After the seven utterances and the water formulas, the goddess is called at morning as the white Gāyatrī of Maheśvara riding a bull with a trident, at midday as the dark Vaiṣṇavī seated on Garuḍa with conch, discus, mace and lotus, and in the afternoon as white Sarasvatī on a white lotus in the sun's disc. The water verses, the verse on the birth of order and truth, and the Sun hymns are said, the Gāyatrī is repeated, and the goddess is given leave to go.

Brahmā said: Now I shall tell in brief the twilight worship of the twice-born. Pure or impure, in whatever state he may be, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed Lord is pure within and without.
Explanation
This verse is said while sprinkling oneself with water at the start of the rite.

Om, homage to the heart; Om earth, svāhā to the head; Om sky, vauṣaṭ to the tuft; heaven, huṃ to the armour; Om earth, sky, heaven, phaṭ to the weapon.
Explanation
Each of the seven worlds is touched to a part of the body, and then the five limbs are sealed with their own syllables, so that the worshipper takes the mantra into himself before using it.

'Waters, you are sources of joy: set us in strength, for great joy and for sight. Give us here a share of your most auspicious essence, like loving mothers. Let us go gladly to you for whose home you stir us; waters, make us fruitful.' 'May waters and plants be friendly to us, and hostile to the one who hates us and whom we hate.' 'As one freed from a post, as one bathed is freed from sweat and dirt, as ghee is cleansed by a strainer, so may the waters cleanse me from sin.' 'Order and truth were born from kindled heat; from that was born night, then the flooding ocean; from the ocean the year was born. The ruler of all that blinks, ordering days and nights, the creator fashioned sun and moon as before, and heaven, earth, mid-air and the light world.'
Explanation
