Chapter Four·The Secret of the Manifest Forms·Verses 1–39
The sage now describes the three forms in which the Goddess acts in the story of the seven hundred verses. Mahākālī of tamas, Viṣṇu's yogic sleep whom Brahmā praised against Madhu and Kaiṭabha, has ten faces, ten arms, ten feet and thirty eyes, dark but beautiful, and holds ten weapons. Mahālakṣmī, who rose from the bodies of all the gods and killed Mahiṣa, has a thousand arms but is worshipped with eighteen; her colours and her eighteen weapons are listed one by one. Sarasvatī, who came from Gaurī's body and killed Śumbha, has eight arms and gives knowledge of all things. Then comes the rite: where each goddess and each divine couple sits, the worship of Time and Death, of the nine powers, of Rudra and Gaṇeśa, of the beheaded buffalo demon and of the lion; the offerings, with a bracketed note that meat and liquor are not for brahmins; how to recite the three episodes (all three, or the middle one alone, never half of one); the fire offering for each verse; and meditation until one becomes one with her. Daily worship brings enjoyment and at last union with the Goddess.

Now the secret of the manifest forms. The sage said: Om. The Goddess who was told as three, the one of the three guṇas, the one of tamas and the one of sattva, is called Śarvā, Caṇḍikā, Durgā, Bhadrā and Bhagavatī.

The "three goddesses in front" of verse 19 are the three forms of the story: the eighteen-armed slayer of Mahiṣa, the ten-faced Mahākālī and the eight-armed Sarasvatī. Behind them sit the four-armed forms of the previous chapter with the three couples.
