Chapter Five · The Secret of the Figures · Verses 1–25

The last of the three secrets gives the forms of the Goddess's later descents, so that each can be pictured in meditation. Nandā, born of Nanda, is golden, four-armed, holding a lotus, a goad, a noose and a conch, and is Lakṣmī herself. Raktadantikā is red in everything, clothes, body, weapons, eyes, hair, nails and teeth; vast as the earth, she feeds her devotees at her breast and serves them as a loving wife serves her husband; she is also Raktacāmuṇḍā and Yogeśvarī. Śākambharī is blue, with lotus eyes, holding arrows, a lotus, a heap of greens and fruit that ends hunger, thirst and the fear of death, and a bright bow; she is Śatākṣī and Durgā, and her worship brings undying food, drink and nectar. Bhīmā is blue with gleaming fangs, holding a sword, a drum, a head and a cup, and is Ekavīrā and Kālarātri. Bhrāmarī shines in many colours and holds bright bees; she is sung as the great plague. The sage calls these the highest secret, to be kept, and says that reciting the mantras frees one even from the gravest sins.

Now the secret of the figures. The sage said: Om. The Goddess named Nandā, who will be born of Nanda, when praised and worshipped with devotion, brings the three worlds under the worshipper's control.

Explanation

This secret describes the forms of the Goddess foretold in the eleventh chapter: Nandā, Raktadantikā, Śākambharī (also called Śatākṣī and Durgā), Bhīmā and Bhrāmarī.

Explanation
