Chapter Two·The Bolt Hymn·Verses 1–25
Mārkaṇḍeya praises the Goddess by her names: Jayantī, Maṅgalā, Kālī, Bhadrakālī, Kapālinī, Durgā, Kṣamā, Śivā, Dhātrī, Svāhā and Svadhā. Then he recalls her great deeds, the defeat of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, of Mahiṣa, of Raktabīja, Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, and of Śumbha, Niśumbha and Dhūmrākṣa, and he praises her as honoured by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and Indra. Every verse from the third on ends with the same prayer: give form, give victory, give fame, destroy enemies. Along the way he asks for good fortune, health, prosperity, learning and a good wife. Whoever reads this hymn and then the great hymn of seven hundred verses gains the full reward of that recitation.

Om. Of this Argalā hymn-mantra, Viṣṇu is the seer, anuṣṭubh the metre, and Śrī Mahālakṣmī the deity. It is used in recitation as a part of reading the Seven Hundred, to please the Mother of the world. Om, salutation to Caṇḍikā.
Explanation
Argalā means a bolt. The hymn is recited like a bolt drawn across a door, before the main recitation.

Om. Jayantī, Maṅgalā, Kālī, Bhadrakālī, Kapālinī, Durgā, Kṣamā, Śivā, Dhātrī, Svāhā, Svadhā: salutation to you.
Explanation
Each name says something about her. Jayantī is ever victorious. Maṅgalā frees devotees from birth and death. Kālī swallows all creation at the end of time. Bhadrakālī accepts good things only to give them to her devotees. Kapālinī carries a skull and wears a garland of heads. Durgā is reached only through hard discipline. Kṣamā forgives every fault. Śivā does good to all. Dhātrī holds up the world. As Svāhā she takes the offerings for the gods, and as Svadhā the offerings for the ancestors.

You who routed Madhu and Kaiṭabha and gave boons to Brahmā, salutation to you. Give me form, give me victory, give me fame, destroy my enemies.
Explanation
The refrain is often read inwardly: form as knowing one's true self, victory as victory over delusion, fame as the glory of that victory, and the enemies as desire, anger and the like.

Argalā means a bolt. The hymn is recited like a bolt drawn across a door, before the main recitation.
