Chapter Three·The Pin·Verses 1–14
A short and famously dense hymn. It opens with a salutation to Śiva, whose body is pure knowledge and whose three eyes are the three Vedas. It then says the Seven Hundred is the pin that unlocks all mantras: through it alone, without other mantras, herbs or rites, every aim is reached. People doubted which means was best, so Śiva declared this hymn the best, and then pinned, or locked, it, so that its merit would not be easily had. The lock is released by an offering to the Goddess made on the fourteenth or eighth day of the dark fortnight, where the devotee gives all and takes it back as her gift. One who recites after this becomes perfected, fearless and free from untimely death. The text adds that the hymn should be recited aloud for its full fruit, and ends by asking why people would not praise the one by whose grace come wealth, fortune, health and liberation.
