Chapter One·The Armour of the Goddess·Verses 1–56
Mārkaṇḍeya asks Brahmā for a secret that protects people in every way, never told to anyone before. Brahmā answers with the Goddess's armour. He first names the nine forms of Durgā, from Śailaputrī to Siddhidātrī, and says that whoever takes refuge in her in fire, battle or any danger meets no harm. Then come the mothers on their mounts, armed to destroy demons and protect devotees. After a salutation, the hymn asks goddesses to guard the ten directions, and then, one by one, every part of the body: hair, face, throat, arms, heart, belly, legs, the seven body tissues, the breaths, the senses, the qualities, and even life, fame, family, cattle and the road. Whatever place the armour does not name, the Goddess guards too. The last verses tell what the armour gives: fearlessness, victory, freedom from disease, poison and hostile spells, long life, a lasting family line, and at death the highest state.
