Chapter Eight · Placing the Seven Hundred · Verses kara–6

The last step before the recitation itself. The reciter declares the seers, deities, metres, powers, seeds, elements and meditations of the three episodes of the Seven Hundred. Then, as with the navārṇa mantra, he places verses on the fingers and on the heart, head, topknot, shoulders, eyes and all round, but this time the verses are taken from the Seven Hundred itself: prayers to the armed Goddess to guard with trident, sword, bell and bow-string, to protect in every direction, with her gentle and terrible forms, and to save from all fears. He then meditates on Durgā, bright as lightning, riding a lion, attended by maidens with swords and shields, and begins the text with "Mārkaṇḍeya said". The text adds advice in prose: read sweetly, clearly and steadily; do not stop in the middle of a chapter; read aloud rather than in the mind.

Meditation. I worship Durgā, three-eyed, bearing the moon, fiery in nature, bright as a chain of lightning, terrible, seated on the shoulder of the lion, the king of beasts. Maidens attend her, swords and shields gleaming in their hands. In her own hands she holds discus, mace, sword, shield, arrows, bow and noose, and one hand is raised in warning.

Explanation

This meditation also opens the twelfth chapter. Guṇa, literally "string", is read here as the noose. After it, say the viniyoga and meditation of the first episode and begin the recitation with "Mārkaṇḍeya said".
