Chapter Two · The Slaying of Mahiṣāsura's Army · Verses 1–69

The middle episode begins. After a hundred years of war Mahiṣāsura has beaten the gods and taken Indra's throne, and the gods, led by Brahmā, go to Viṣṇu and Śiva for help. The anger of the gods pours out of their bodies as light, and the light gathers into one and becomes the Goddess. Each part of her body comes from one god's light, and each god then gives her a weapon or an ornament of his own. She laughs and roars, the worlds shake, and Mahiṣāsura's generals come against her with armies beyond counting. She cuts their weapons down as if in play, her lion ranges through their ranks like fire in a forest, and the breaths she lets out as she fights become troops that fight beside her. The chapter ends with the whole demon army destroyed and the gods raining flowers; Mahiṣāsura himself is left for the next chapter.

The heads of others fell. Others were split through the middle. Other great demons fell to the earth with their legs cut through.

The Goddess cut some in two, so that each half had one arm, one eye and one foot. Others fell when their heads were cut off, and rose up again.

Headless trunks fought the Goddess with fine weapons in their hands. Others danced there in the battle, keeping time with the war-music.

Where that great battle took place, the earth was so covered with fallen chariots, elephants, horses and demons that no one could walk there.
