Chapter Seven·The Slaying of Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa·Verses 1–27
Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa march out with a full army and find the Devī smiling on a golden peak of the mountain. Some of them string their bows and draw their swords and close in. The Devī's face turns dark with anger, and from her frowning brow Kālī leaps out: gaunt, clad in a tiger skin, wearing a garland of human heads, with a lolling tongue, sunken red eyes and a roar that fills the sky. She falls on the army and eats it: elephants with their riders and bells, horses, chariots and charioteers, crushing some underfoot and chewing the weapons thrown at her. Caṇḍa covers her with a storm of arrows and Muṇḍa with thousands of discuses, which vanish into her mouth like many suns into a cloud. Laughing terribly, she seizes Caṇḍa by the hair and cuts off his head, then kills Muṇḍa too; the rest of the army flees. Kālī brings the two heads to Caṇḍikā as offerings for the sacrifice of battle, and Caṇḍikā tells her that because she brought Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, she will be known in the world as Cāmuṇḍā.

Om. I meditate on Mātaṅgī. She sits on a jewelled seat, listening to the sweet chatter of a parrot. Her body is dark. One foot rests on a lotus. She wears a sliver of the moon and plays a vīṇā. She wears a garland of white water-lilies, a close-fitting shining bodice and red clothes. She holds a conch-shell cup, is lightly flushed with sweet wine, and a mark shines on her forehead.
