Chapter One·The Slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha·Verses 1–104
The first of the three episodes. Mārkaṇḍeya tells of Sāvarṇi, the eighth Manu, and how he rose to his rank by the grace of Mahāmāyā. In an earlier age King Suratha loses a war, is robbed by his own ministers, and rides alone into the forest. At the hermitage of the sage Medhas he meets Samādhi, a merchant whose wife and sons threw him out for his money. Both men still worry about the very people and things that failed them, and they ask the sage why they cannot let go even though they know better. The sage answers that all creatures have knowledge of a kind, yet Mahāmāyā, the Goddess who is also Viṣṇu's yogic sleep, pulls even the wise into attachment; when she is pleased, she is also the one who sets them free. Asked who she is, he tells a story. At the end of an age Viṣṇu sleeps on the serpent in the endless ocean. Two demons, Madhu and Kaiṭabha, spring from the wax of his ears and rush to kill Brahmā, who sits in the lotus at Viṣṇu's navel. Brahmā praises the Goddess of sleep as the source, keeper and end of all, and asks her to release Viṣṇu. She leaves his body, Viṣṇu wakes and fights the demons for five thousand years. Confused by Mahāmāyā, they proudly offer him a boon; he asks for their death. They ask to be killed where the earth is not under water, and he cuts off their heads on his thighs.

Om. I worship Mahākālī. In her hands she holds a sword, discus, mace, arrow, bow, iron club, trident, bhuśuṇḍī, a severed head and a conch. She has three eyes and wears ornaments on every limb. She shines like a blue gem and has ten faces and ten feet. While Hari slept, the lotus-born Brahmā praised her so that Madhu and Kaiṭabha might be killed.

"You are Svāhā. You are Svadhā. You are the call vaṣaṭ. The notes of the chant are your very self.
Explanation
Svāhā, svadhā and vaṣaṭ are the words called out when offerings are made: svāhā to the gods, svadhā to the ancestors, and vaṣaṭ at the Vedic sacrifice. Brahmā says the Goddess is these calls themselves.

You are the nectar of life. You dwell in the eternal syllable Om as its three sounds. You are also its eternal half-sound, which cannot be spoken aloud.
Explanation
