Chapter Four·The Gods Praise the Devī·Verses 1–42
Mahiṣa and his army are dead. Indra and the other gods bow to the Devī and praise her in a long hymn. She is the power that fills the world; even Viṣṇu, Brahmā and Śiva cannot fully describe her. She is fortune in the homes of the good and misfortune in the homes of the wicked, faith in the good and modesty in the well-born. She is the Vedas, the offering-call svāhā and svadhā, learning, and the boat across the ocean of worldly life. The gods marvel that she kills demons only with weapons, not with a glance, so that even her enemies, purified by her weapons, reach heaven. They ask her to guard them in every direction with her spear, sword, bell and bow. Pleased, the Devī offers a boon. The gods ask that she come back whenever they are in trouble, and that she grant wealth, family and good fortune to anyone who praises her with this hymn. She agrees and vanishes. The sage then begins to tell how she appeared again, from the body of Gaurī, to kill Śumbha and Niśumbha.

Om. One should meditate on Durgā, named Jayā. She is dark as a black rain-cloud. Her side-glances strike fear into the hosts of enemies. The crescent moon is bound on her head. In her hands she holds a conch, a discus, a sword and a trident. She has three eyes. She rides on the shoulders of a lion and fills all three worlds with her radiance. The gods surround her, and those who seek success serve her.
