Chapter Five·The Messenger to the Devī·Verses 1–129
The third episode begins. The demon brothers Śumbha and Niśumbha, proud of their strength, have taken the three worlds and the gods' share of the sacrifice. They have even taken over the work of the sun, the moon, Kubera, Yama, Varuṇa, wind and fire. The gods remember the Devī's promise to come whenever they call, go to Himavat, and praise her. Their hymn salutes her as the one who lives in all beings as consciousness, intelligence, sleep, hunger, shadow, power, thirst, patience, birth, modesty, peace, faith, beauty, fortune, livelihood, memory, kindness, contentment, mother and error, each line ending with a threefold bow. While they pray, Pārvatī comes to bathe in the Ganges and asks whom they are praising. From her own body comes Śivā, who says the hymn is for her. Because she came out of Pārvatī's body-sheath she is called Kauśikī, and Pārvatī herself turns dark and is called Kālikā. Śumbha's servants Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa see Ambikā and describe her beauty to their master, listing every treasure he has seized and saying this woman alone is missing. Śumbha sends the demon Sugrīva as messenger. He delivers Śumbha's boast and his offer of marriage. The Devī smiles and replies that she once made a foolish vow: she will marry only the one who defeats her in battle and takes away her pride. Let Śumbha or Niśumbha come and win her.

Om. Here I worship Mahāsarasvatī. In her lotus hands she holds a bell, a spear, a plough, a conch, a pestle, a discus, a bow and an arrow. She shines like the moon when the rains are over. She was born from Gaurī's body. She is the support of the three worlds, and she crushes Śumbha and the other demons.
