8.1
O highest of persons, what is that Brahman? What is the inner self? What is action? What is called the realm of beings, and what is said to be the realm of the gods?
8.2
O slayer of Madhu, who is the realm of sacrifice here in this body, and how does he dwell in it? And how are you to be known at the time of departure by those who have mastered themselves?
Brahman is the supreme imperishable. One's own being is called the inner self. The offering that brings beings into existence is named action.
8.4
The realm of beings is perishable existence. The realm of the gods is the Person. And the realm of sacrifice, here in the body, is I myself, O best of the embodied.
8.5
And whoever departs at the last moment, leaving the body while remembering me alone, reaches my being. There is no doubt in this.
8.6
Whatever state of being a person remembers when he gives up the body at the end, O son of Kuntī, to that alone he goes, for he has always been shaped by that thought.
8.7
Therefore remember me at all times, and fight. With your mind and understanding fixed on me, you will surely come to me. There is no doubt.
With a mind trained by the discipline of practice, that does not wander to anything else, one who thinks constantly of the supreme divine Person reaches him, O son of Pṛthā.
8.9
One may remember him as the all-knowing seer, ancient, the ruler, subtler than the atom, the sustainer of all, whose form is beyond thought, radiant as the sun, beyond all darkness.
Whoever remembers him so at the time of departure, with an unmoving mind, joined with devotion and with the strength of yoga, placing the breath well between the brows, reaches that supreme divine Person.
That which the knowers of the Veda call the imperishable, which ascetics free of passion enter, and desiring which people practise a life of celibate discipline: that goal I will tell you briefly.
8.12
One closes all the gates of the body, holds the mind in the heart, places the breath in the head, and stays established in the steady hold of yoga.
8.13
Uttering Om, the one syllable that is Brahman, and remembering me, whoever departs this way, leaving the body, reaches the highest goal.
8.14
Whoever remembers me constantly, every day, with a mind on nothing else, O son of Pṛthā, for that yogī, ever joined to me, I am easy to reach.
Those who know that a day of Brahmā lasts a thousand ages, and that his night ends only after a thousand ages, are the people who truly know day and night.
At the coming of that day, all manifest things come forth from the unmanifest. At the coming of night, they dissolve back into that very thing called the unmanifest.
8.19
This same multitude of beings comes into being again and again and dissolves at the coming of night, helplessly, O son of Pṛthā, and comes forth again at the coming of day.
8.20
But beyond that unmanifest there is another being, unmanifest and eternal, higher than it. When all beings perish, it does not perish.
8.21
That unmanifest is spoken of as the imperishable, and they call it the highest goal. Having reached it, no one returns. That is my supreme abode.
8.22
That supreme Person, O son of Pṛthā, in whom all beings live and by whom all this is pervaded, is reached by undivided devotion.
Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the sun's southern course: the yogī who goes on that path reaches the light of the moon and returns.
8.26
These two paths of the world, the bright and the dark, are held to be everlasting. By one a person goes and does not return; by the other he comes back again.
Whatever fruit of merit is promised for the Vedas, for sacrifices, austerities and gifts, the yogī who knows this goes beyond all of it, and reaches the supreme, original state.
