2.1
To him, overcome with pity, grieving, his eyes troubled and full of tears, Madhusūdana spoke these words.
2.2
Arjuna, where has this weakness come from, at this hard hour? It is not worthy of a noble man. It does not lead to heaven, and it brings disgrace.
2.3
Son of Pṛthā, do not yield to unmanliness. It does not suit you. Cast off this petty weakness of heart and stand up, scorcher of foes.
2.4
Madhusūdana, how can I fight back with arrows in battle against Bhīṣma and Droṇa? Slayer of enemies, they are worthy of worship.
2.5
It is better to live on begged food in this world than to kill these noble teachers. If I kill them, even though they seek their own ends, every pleasure I enjoy here will be smeared with blood.
2.6
We do not even know which is better for us: that we should win, or that they should win over us. The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra stand before us, and if we killed them we would not wish to live.
My nature is overcome by the fault of weakness, and my mind is confused about dharma. I ask you: tell me for certain what is truly good for me. I am your pupil. Teach me, for I have taken refuge in you.
2.8
For I see nothing that could drive away this grief that dries up my senses, not even a prosperous kingdom on earth without a rival, nor lordship over the gods.
Having spoken thus to Hṛṣīkeśa, Guḍākeśa, the scorcher of foes, said to Govinda, "I will not fight," and fell silent.
2.10
Then, descendant of Bharata, between the two armies, Hṛṣīkeśa, as if smiling, spoke these words to the grieving Arjuna.
2.11
You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, and yet you speak words that sound wise. The wise grieve neither for the dead nor for the living.
2.12
Never was there a time when I was not, nor you, nor these kings. Nor will any of us ever cease to be from now on.
2.13
Just as the one who lives in this body passes through childhood, youth and old age, so it passes on to another body. The steady person is not bewildered by this.
2.14
Son of Kuntī, the contacts of the senses with their objects give cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and do not last. Bear them patiently, descendant of Bharata.
2.15
Best among men, the steady person whom these do not disturb, who is the same in pain and pleasure, is fit for immortality.
The unreal has no being, and the real never ceases to be. Those who see the truth have seen the final truth of both.
2.17
Know that to be imperishable by which all this is pervaded. No one can destroy this undecaying one.
2.18
These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, immeasurable embodied one are said to have an end. So fight, descendant of Bharata.
2.19
One who thinks this Self slays, and one who thinks it is slain, both fail to understand. It neither slays nor is slain.
2.20
It is never born and never dies. It did not come to be, and will not come to be again. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.
2.21
Son of Pṛthā, when a person knows this Self to be indestructible, eternal, unborn and undecaying, how can he slay anyone, or cause anyone to be slain?
Just as a man casts off worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the embodied one casts off worn-out bodies and enters new ones.
2.23
Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and wind does not dry it.
2.24
It is beyond the reach of weapons, fire, water and wind, for it is eternal, present everywhere, steady, unmoving and ancient.
2.25
It is called unmanifest, beyond thought and unchanging. So, knowing it to be such, you should not grieve.
2.26
And even if you think it is constantly born and constantly dies, mighty-armed one, still you should not grieve like this.
2.27
For death is certain for what is born, and birth is certain for what has died. So you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.
2.28
Beings are unmanifest in the beginning, manifest in the middle, and unmanifest again at the end, descendant of Bharata. What is there to lament in that?
2.29
Someone sees this Self as a wonder, another speaks of it as a wonder, another hears of it as a wonder. And even after hearing, no one truly knows it.
2.30
The one who dwells in everyone's body can never be slain, descendant of Bharata. So you should not grieve for any being.
2.31
Looking at your own dharma too, you should not waver. For a kṣatriya there is nothing better than a righteous war.
This understanding has been told to you in terms of knowledge. Now hear it in terms of yoga. Son of Pṛthā, joined with this understanding, you will cast off the bondage of action.
2.40
In this path no effort begun is lost, and no harm comes from it. Even a little of this practice saves one from great fear.
Son of Pṛthā, the unwise speak flowery words. They delight in the words of the Veda and say there is nothing beyond them.
2.43
They are full of desires and hold heaven as the highest goal. Their speech is full of special rites aimed at pleasure and power, and it brings rebirth as the fruit of action.
Those who are attached to pleasure and power, whose minds are carried away by that speech, do not gain the resolute understanding that rests in samādhi.
The Vedas deal with the three guṇas. Arjuna, go beyond the three guṇas. Be free from the pairs of opposites, ever established in purity, free from the worry of getting and keeping, centred in the Self.
Dhanañjaya, action done for a reward is far below the yoga of understanding. Take refuge in that understanding. Those who act for the fruit are pitiable.
2.50
One joined with understanding leaves behind both good and evil deeds, here in this life. So devote yourself to yoga. Yoga is skill in action.
For the wise, joined with understanding, give up the fruit born of action. Freed from the bondage of birth, they reach the state that is free from all ill.
2.52
When your understanding crosses beyond the thicket of delusion, you will become indifferent to all that you have heard and all that is yet to be heard.
Your understanding is now bewildered by all it has heard. When it stands unmoved and steady in samādhi, then you will attain yoga.
2.54
Keśava, what are the marks of one whose wisdom is steady, who is settled in samādhi? How does a man of steady mind speak, how does he sit, how does he walk?
Son of Pṛthā, when a person gives up all the desires that arise in the mind and is content in the Self alone, by the Self, he is called one of steady wisdom.
When the embodied one does not take them in, the objects fall away, but the taste for them remains. When he has seen the Supreme, even the taste falls away.
From anger comes delusion, and from delusion confusion of memory. When memory is lost, understanding is ruined, and when understanding is ruined, he perishes.
As the waters enter the ocean, which is ever being filled yet stays unmoved in its depths, so all desires enter the one who attains peace, not the one who chases desires.
2.71
A person who gives up all desires and lives free from longing, without "mine" and without ego, attains peace.
Son of Pṛthā, this is the state of Brahman. Having reached it, one is never deluded again. Remaining in it even at the hour of death, one reaches the peace of Brahman.
