They speak of an undying aśvattha tree with its root above and its branches below. The Vedic hymns are its leaves. One who knows it knows the Veda.

Its branches spread below and above, swollen by the qualities, with sense objects as buds. Below, in the world of men, its roots stretch out, binding through action.

Its form is not seen here as it is, nor its end, nor its beginning, nor what it stands on. Cut down this aśvattha, with its roots grown deep, with the strong axe of non-attachment.

Then one must seek that state from which those who reach it do not return again, thinking: "I take refuge in that first Person alone, from whom this ancient flow came forth."

Free of pride and delusion, having overcome the fault of attachment, always turned to the Self, their desires ended, freed from the pairs called pleasure and pain, the undeluded go to that imperishable state.

The sun does not light it, nor the moon, nor fire. Having reached it, they do not return. That is my supreme abode.

An eternal portion of my own, having become the individual soul in the world of the living, draws to itself the five senses and the mind as the sixth, which rest in nature.

When the master of the body takes a body, and when he leaves it, he takes these with him and goes, as the wind carries scents from flowers.

Presiding over the ear, the eye, the skin, the tongue, the nose and the mind, he enjoys the objects of sense.

Whether he leaves the body or stays in it, or enjoys joined with the qualities, the deluded do not see him. Those with the eye of knowledge see.

Yogīs who strive see him dwelling within themselves. But the thoughtless, whose minds are unpurified, do not see him even when they strive.

The light in the sun that lights the whole world, the light in the moon and the light in fire: know that light to be mine.

Entering the earth, I hold up all beings by my power. Becoming the moon, full of sap, I nourish all plants.

Becoming the fire of digestion and dwelling in the bodies of living beings, joined with the in-breath and out-breath, I cook the four kinds of food.

It is in the heart of all beings that I am seated. Memory comes from me, and knowledge, and their loss as well. Through all the Vedas, I alone am to be known. And I am also the knower of the Veda, and the maker of Vedānta.

There are two persons in the world, the perishable and the imperishable. The perishable is all beings. The changeless one is called the imperishable.

But the highest Person is another, called the supreme Self: the unchanging Lord who enters the three worlds and upholds them.

Because I am beyond the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, I am renowned in the world and in the Veda as the Supreme Person.

One who, free of delusion, knows me thus as the Supreme Person knows all, and worships me with his whole being, O Bhārata.

Thus I have told you this most secret teaching, O sinless one. Understanding it, one becomes wise and has done all that was to be done, O Bhārata.
